We have all had a headache at some point in our lives. They can be caused by relatively simple things like dehydration or a cold, or very serious issues like tumours or strokes. These issues are easy to fit into the “self help” or “urgent medical investigation” categories.
Chiropractic can help with headaches that fit in the middle of this scale. The type of headaches that some people come to view as part of normal life. Headaches that they may have looked into but been told there is nothing else that can be done. Cervicogenic (from the neck) headaches and migraine-like headaches have good research proving they respond to hands-on care like Chiropractic.
Who is most likely to suffer from headaches?
All sorts of people can get headaches. One cause we commonly see (particularly with the advent of working from home) is sub-occipital tension-type headaches that send pain to the side and front of your head.
Sub-occipital muscles are the ones at the base of your skull and the top of your neck. Sitting and looking at screens creates a lot of static contraction in these muscles that eventually become so tight they produce pain and refer it to the side and front of your skull.
How do Chiropractors help guests with headaches?
The word Chiropractic is derived from the Greek for done by hand. So our treatment (or adjustments as we call it) for headaches most commonly addresses the tension in the top of your neck. This can be by fingertip pressure or by adjustments of the spinal vertebrae motion. Adjustments are very quick and make a “crack” that a lot of people find very relaxing or they can be very subtle and gentle, but equally relaxing.
If you are in doubt about any head pains you are experiencing do not ignore them. No frequency of headaches should be normal in your life.
Have a consultation with one of our friendly chiropractors and we will tell you what is causing your discomfort.
If we can’t help you we will make sure we suggest what course of action you should take next.
