Older people and Chiropractic
Chiropractic is for all ages, whether you are with child or classing yourself as an older person. We treat all, even those just days old! There are multiple reasons that people of a variety of ages visit us- but the majority falls around wanting to be pain free with better mobility.
What can a chiropractor do for older guests?
Well, long story short a chiropractor will support and help a guest to the best of their ability no matter the age. Whether you’re 85 with the same problem as a 25 year old, the aim is to personalise the treatment to you.
Older people tend to heal slower and can’t be pushed as far during treatment. Typically things take a little bit longer than it would be a younger person. All of this information is considered, from speaking personally with the guest, the problematic area and much more. The point is to help you live life to the fullest.
Having treatment and maintenance as we age is one of the best things we can do to help support our body. With time and under stimulation some muscle groups can deteriorate over time. Something we can do is keep those muscle groups active.
We are able to work the muscle, encourage specific stretches that help the target muscles to be strengthened and operational. By keeping them active we are able to support joints, improve mobility and reduce pain while being both stationary and occupied.
Does it matter what age you are?
Not at all, like we said we treat everyone no matter the age. With most things it is better to start sooner rather than later. That is so we can catch the problem early, start treatment as soon as possible, and you wouldn’t be in as much pain for as long a time.
Most of us only go seek help after we have been in A LOT of pain for a LONG time. I mean we are human after all and really like to push our own limits just for the sake of things. Catching it early through consistent maintenance means we can get that problem sorted before it is problematic.
Age is in fact just a number with chiropractic care, if we have said it once we have said it 1000 times- everyone should go to a chiropractor at least once every few months! Just for a basic check-up, your whole body can be thrown off by a slight misalignment in the spine.
Does chiropractic work for older people?
As we get older, we are more prone to injury and prolonged pain, ultimately meaning that healing takes longer. Depending on the individual depends on the time it would take. But that doesn’t mean that you’d never heal, be pain free, or healthier. It just means it may take a little longer to achieve those goals depending on your problem.
Similarly to younger people, it truly depends on you. Some people are faster healers, some people twist an ankle, and others would snap a ligament. That would only impact chiropractic care if an injury had to have surgical intervention or if there was a treatment option wasn’t working as expectantly (we’d then just re-evaluate your plan and look into alternative options).
But we can say that visiting us is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
