What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy sounds pretty terrifying, but don’t worry it really isn’t bad. Hearing the words shock and wave together does sound like some type of pain inducing equipment. Well, it actually has the opposite effect, and in addition some individuals have said it starts making a difference after their first treatment.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is a treatment that involves radial pressure waves. Low energy passes through damaged tissues. This increases blood flow and jump starts the healing process. This is a treatment that we use frequently as it is a great solution, and helps us find the root of the problem.
What are radial shockwaves?
Shockwave therapy has been used for 40+ years, starting in the 1980’s as a non-surgical treatment for kidney stones. Now, we use it to treat many different areas of the body. They emit a gentle frequency into the damaged or pained area and help break down physical problems (e.g. calcification). Or, they help with healing and the energy pulses connect to the brain directly to the problem area.
Who uses shockwave?
It is used widely as a treatment across many different health professions. Such as: physiotherapy, podiatry, osteopathy, sports medicine, orthopaedics, and of course, chiropractic. Shockwave is clinically proven and recognised by the top orthopaedic hospitals and is used by high-profile professionals.
What does shockwave treat?
The use of shockwave therapy can help support and promote healing in multiple injuries and pain causes. For example: Plantar Fasciitis, Myofascial Pain, Chronic Tendinopathies (from your achilles to your distal biceps), Calcific Tendinopathy, and more. This treatment is an incredibly safe way to start healing, and to ease pain.
Is shockwave therapy painful?
In general, you may experience some discomfort during, but it should be tolerable. The energy levels and frequency can be adjusted to fit your tolerances and how far into treatment you are. Most importantly many patients report that they have immediate pain relief after treatment. Shockwave is largely risk-free and has its own set of guidelines that are used in the NHS and private healthcare.
All in all, as a treatment it is incredibly useful and nowhere near as dramatic as it sounds. It is an incredible treatment, if you would like more information then don’t hesitate to reach out or give us a call. Alternatively we do have a page dedicated to Shockwave, click here to be redirected.
